Point Slope Form
Point slope form is when it gives you a coorinate point and a slope.
Point-slope refers to a method for graphing a linear equationon an x-y axis. When graphing a linear equation, the
whole idea is to take pairs of x's and y's and plot them on the graph. While you
could plot several points by just plugging in values of x, the point-slope form
makes the whole process simpler. Point-slope form is also used to take a graph
and find the equation of that particular line.
The slope formula is m=y2-y1 over x2-x1.
In order to get it into point slope form you have to start
with the slope formula which is m=y2-y1 over x2-x1.
Next, you mulitply (x2-x1) to both sides.
(x2-x1)m=y2-y1 over x2-x1(x2-x1)
After,you end up with (x2-x1)m=(y2-y1)
Finally you drop the second point and rewite.
(x-x1)m=y-y1 or y-y1=m(x-x1)
This is how you get your slope formula into point slope form.
The variables in the equation y−y 1 =m(x−x 1 ) are x and y.
That is, this is an equation in two variables, x and y.
Thus, its solution set is the set of all ordered pairs (x,y)
that make it true. For a given equation:
.

- the number m
is a constant that represents the slope of the line; - the number x 1
(read as ‘ex sub one’) is a constant that represents the x -value
of the known point; - the number y1 is a constant that represents the y -value
of the known point
